A 16-YEAR-OLD Mbembesi boy died on the spot in an accident involving a donkey-drawn cart that veered off the road and overturned last Friday.

Report by Pamela Mhlanga

Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Eglon Nkala yesterday confirmed the incident.

“Three children aged 16, 15 and 11 years were travelling in a donkey-drawn scotch cart on their way to purchase alcohol in bulk from Mbembesi Bottlestore for a local bottlestore,” he said.

Nkala said about 30 minutes into the journey, the donkey-drawn cart suddenly increased speed, which made it difficult for the trio to control the donkeys and the 16-year-old Thembelani Nkiwane jumped off the cart.

“The cart veered from its route before it hit a pole that was located at the corner of a field, it then overturned and in the process struck the 16- year- old who stood nearby on the head,” he said.

Nkala said the boy died on the spot and the matter was reported to Mbembesi police. His body was taken to Mbembesi Hospital where it is still awaiting a post-mortem.

He urged the public to be extra cautious when riding donkey-drawn carts and to master the art of controlling the donkeys.
