A music gala organised to celebrate the country’s 33rd Independence at Murambinda growth point in Buhera over the weekend lived to its billing as thousands of merrymakers thronged the business centre while most musicians delivered good acts.

Dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu was the centre of attraction at the celebrations.

Chimbetu took to the stage in the early hours of Saturday and belted Simon Chimbetu’s yester-year hits to the delight of the fans.

Songs from his upcoming album Compass that include Ndondo, Pfuti, Pahotera and Bhora Mberi left fans convinced that he is a serious dendera crown contender.

After his performance fans mobbed the musician as he got off the stage. It took the musician more than 30 minutes to get to his car as fans jostled to get closer to him.

Excited fans lifted Chimbetu amid wild cheers and the police had to intervene to clear the chaos. His car was mobbed and fans followed him for a distance until the police again cleared the mob.

The gala had exciting highlights and Red Cross Humanitarian Ambassador Alick Macheso had his first performance at the venue since he formed Orchestra Mberikwazvo.

Macheso last performed at the place many years ago when he was part of Nicholas Zakaria’s Khiama Boys.

The musician, as usual, gave a first class performance with songs from his latest album Kwatakabva Mitunhu (Kure Kwekure) becoming popular.

Songs Shedia, Chimoko Changu, Macharangwanda and Cynthia became the crowd’s favourites.

The hitmaker, however, left the bar too high for 19-year-old  gospel artiste Lisa Machakwa who failed to impress the crowds.

The young gospel artiste’s dull performance almost dampened the event.

However, Mutare-based gospel artist Blessing Shumba then brought the event to life again.

Songs Mboni Yeziso, Ndichauya Nei, Kurwakwakanaka and Kanganwiro from his latest album were enough to send the crowds into delirium.

Cde Chinx, however, failed to give his usual performance after his time on stage was marred by continuous power cuts.

The Dembo brothers Morgan and Tendai were among the better performers on the night after belting their father’s songs such as Chiteke kete and Venenzia.

Other artistes that performed at the gala include Bob Nyabinde, Mbare Chimurenga Choir, Last “Tambaoga” Chiyangwa and Mboko dance group.

The gala was organised by Zimbabwe Youth Action Group.
