INDIAN WELLS — Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were taken to three sets in their respective matches, but both were second-round winners Sunday at the $4,33 million BNP Paribas Open.

The World No 1 Djokovic at first seemed to be cruising to victory against Fabio Fognini, but hit a bump in the road before taking a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 decision over the Italian. The top-seeded Serb is a two-time champion at this event.

Murray had a scare after dropping the first set to Russian-born Evgeny Donskoy, but the World No 3 bounced back to take a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The British native finished as runner-up here back in 2009 and is playing in his first tournament since losing to Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open.

In their first match-up in four years, eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed nearly an hour and 45 minutes to dispose of American James Blake, winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

Australian Marinko Matosevic produced the biggest upset of the day, taking out 14th-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.

Seventh-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro advanced on Sunday with relative ease, ousting Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4 in just under an hour and 20 minutes.
