POLICE in Harare have intensified their anti-crime campaigns in the city following a sharp increase in criminal activities since last year.

Report by Feluna Nleya

Addressing Hatcliffe residents on the outskirts of the capital yesterday, Officer Commanding Harare district Senior Assistant Commissioner Clement Munoriarwa said Harare was fast becoming a haven for criminals with 63 834 cases of rape, 7 763 break-ins and 63 murders recorded in the past year alone.

Munoriarwa said the city had also witnessed an upsurge in robberies with 156 cases recorded last year.

“We believe these statistics are too high therefore every reason to hold these campaigns to give the residents of Harare tips on how to avoid such crimes,” he said.

“This is the first community policing campaign in the province and this is because we realised that a lot of crime was being committed and these cases were now bothering us because most of these crimes are committed in the home where the policeman is not always available.
