ZANU PF has launched a scathing attack on Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa saying he was ill-qualified to comment about the 1987 Unity Accord signed between PF Zapu and Zanu PF as he was not a signatory to the deal.

Zanu PF Bulawayo provincial chairperson Killian Sibanda told NewsDay yesterday that it was wrong for Dabengwa to claim that the clause on the dual vice-presidency was included in the Constitution to accommodate former Zapu members.
“Dabengwa is not signatory to the Unity Accord signed in 1987 and is not qualified to be questioning the issue of two vice-presidents,” Sibanda said.
“After all, it is the will of the people that there be two vice-presidents in government as per the provisions of the draft constitution which we all know was people-driven. Who is Dabengwa then to question the will of the people?”
Dabengwa last week told journalists in Bulawayo that it was no longer necessary to retain the dual vice-presidency since his party pulled out of the Unity Accord in 2008. He said all former Zapu members remaining in Zanu PF were representing their own individual interests.
He claimed that some senior Zanu PF members were now begging him to rejoin the party and fill the position of Vice-President which fell vacant following the recent death of incumbent John Landa Nkomo last month, adding he had turned down the request.
But Sibanda yesterday refuted Dabengwa’s claims saying even if the Zapu leader had not pulled out, he would not have been considered as there were more senior members better qualified for the position.
