The Buccaneers, double-treble champions last season, found themselves 3-0 down against the footballing minnows before finding the back of the net themselves just before the hour mark, but they further conceded in the closing stages to see their cup run crash and burn at the first corner.

Lucky Mokoena put the hosts ahead after just 47 seconds, Senzo Meyiwa finding himself in no-man’s-land to allow the forward to roll his shot past him and into the back of the net.

Mashale Rantabane doubled their lead midway through the first half, doing well to get on the end of a corner to head home on 25 minutes.

Mokoena then added his second and Maluti’s third, also from a corner after powering home his header from the edge of the area.

The Sea Robbers looked set to go further behind after conceding a penalty, although the hosts were unable to convert and from there they countered in style, with Oupa Manyisa breaking into the area and slotting his shot home.

However, there was to be no spectacular fight-back. With nine minutes remaining, the minnows drove home the final nail in Pirates’ coffin, Rantabane completing his brace with a simple tap-in with his head to send the second-division side through to the last-16.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs exacted their Telkom Knockout revenge on Wits as they hammered the Clever Boys 3-0 at the Mbombela Stadium.

The Students had dumped Amakhosi out of the 2012 Ziwa Mo at the first round, but the Soweto giants were able to pay their rivals back as Siboniso Gaxa, Morgan Gould and Mandla Masango all got on the score-sheet for the visitors to put them through to the last-16.

In other results, Supersport United edged out Moroka Swallows 5-3 in a penalty shootout after the match ended goalless, Golden Arrows thrashed Vardos FC 4-0, Chippa United slumped to a 3-2 extra-time defeat to United FC and Maritzburg saw off University of Pretoria 4-2 on penalties after another goalless draw.
