SENIOR Zanu PF officials, politicians, the corporate world and government ministries yesterday fell over each other to congratulate President Robert Mugabe on his 89th birthday by flighting expensive advertisements in the State media.

The elaborate adverts were flighted despite persistent reports that the government is broke.

Among those who went an extra mile to praise Mugabe were the children of freedom fighters who walked 89 kms from Harare to Bindura in his honour.

The Zanu PF Youth League had urged all the youths to dedicate 89 minutes yesterday to do any kind of social work in honour of Mugabe.

Under-fire Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono pledged 89 beasts to the veteran leader.

The Ministry of Defence headed by Emmerson Mnangagwa weighed in saying: “We pray that this birthday brings with it renewed vigour and resilience in your leadership for the development and prosperity of our motherland, Zimbabwe.

“We salute you Gushungo (Mugabe’s totem) for your wisdom, wise counsel, visionary leadership, determination and courage which continue to inspire all patriotic Zimbabweans.

“May the Almighty God continue to give you, Your Excellency, good health and many more successful years.”

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) also wished the Zanu PF leader good health.

“Today the nation celebrates the 89th birthday of one of Zimbabwe’s illustrious and highly-decorated sons, His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe . . . I convey our hearty congratulations on his birthday anniversary and wish him many more years of happiness and good health,” Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri said.

The recently appointed Zimbabwe Human Rights commission chairperson Jacob Mudenda, while addressing delegates at a function to commission an aviation academy in Harare, asked delegates to join him in wishing the President a happy birthday.

“How many of us can reach 89?” he asked rhetorically.

“Our relatives, friends, and citizens these days do not even reach the age of 35. They are dropping down like some guavas from some tree. It is really an honour and a blessing for the President to reach the age 89 and still feel very strong.”
