ZIMBABWEAN film producer Angeline Dimingo has started working on her new short film titled Chishamiso.

Report by Silence Charumbira

The storyline centres on Chishamiso (played by Dalms Chiwereva), adisadvantaged girl who faces numerous challenges in her life and resorts to prostitution. Chiwereva, of the Lobola fame, stars alongside Melgin Tafirenyika.

Chiwereva has a relatively successful film history having featured in Tsitsi Dangaremba’s I Want a Wedding Dress, Izolo Yizolo by Thoko Zulu, Suburb D by Jason Mpepho and Zambezi by Marc T Mandisoul, among others. Tafirenyika on the other hand has gained lots of experience appearing in a number of South African productions like Isidingo and Game Mates.

A United Kingdom-based young man Declan (Tafirenyika) returns home (Zimbabwe) to be with his family as his brother is now bed-ridden due to HIV. He comes across a teenage prostitute (Chishamiso) living in one of Harare’s peri-urban slums. After spending a night with her, he is convinced that he is the only person who can change her.

The script for the movie was written by Masimba Musodza based on his short story with the same title.

Dimingo is a product of the Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe training programme.

She produced and directed the short film When Hunger Strikes.

She worked with Dangarembga on Nyaminyami and I want a Wedding Dress. She also worked with Tawanda Gunda on the award-winning Manje So. Dimingo has also acted in Chipo’s Promise (Soul City Project) and was also that film’s script supervisor.

She recently told NewsDay that they were targeting festival appearances and television screenings later this year.

“The project offers many opportunities for the corporate world in Zimbabwe and abroad,” said Dimingo. “Funding has been sourced so far from the co- producers, while corporate sponsorship, crowd-funding and broadcasting rights sales are expected to complement this.”

The project is being co-produced with UK-based company Orit Films who will be responsible for the editing.

Dimingo said the pre-production phases of the film would be done by February 24 and the film would be out by April 1.
