CAPE TOWN — Ice-cream vendor Luke Dausi has reason to smile again after a brutal attack on Sea Point’s promenade left him with no front teeth.

Report by IOL

Since the attack last Wednesday, Cape Town residents have rallied to support Dausi.

Dentist Marc Sher volunteered to assess and treat Dausi.

“I saw Luke late last week for assessment. He was in a lot of pain with a large amount of bruising and swelling,” said Sher.

“We’ve been through scans and called on other specialists to assist. We managed to make him some dentures, so he can at least smile again.”

The dentist said it was still a long road to recovery, with surgery required to put implants in Dausi’s mouth.

“It can take anywhere from three months to over a year.”

Dausi’s employers at Ola have organised financial assistance for the 22-year-old Zimbabwean. The company aims to help Dausi find a home, and move him out of the shelter where he lives.

“At least this horrible story is turning into something bigger. And hopefully we can help Luke and his family,” said employer David East. Dausi is scheduled for surgery on Friday.

He was selling ice-cream from his bicycle when two men, one with a skateboard and the other wielding a baseball bat, approached him at 4.20pm, and asked how much his ice-cream was.

Before Dausi could respond, he was knocked unconscious with a blow to the face from the bat.

The men fled with two cellphones and R430.

Police said no arrests had been made.
