NEWLY-PROMOTED Premiership side How Mine Football Club will on January 16 hold an elective annual general meeting (AGM) with sponsors Metallon Gold pledging continued support for the gold miners as they step into their maiden season in top-flight action.

REPORT BY FORTUNE MBELE SPORTS REPORTER

The How Mine executive committee led by chairman Mlondolozi Nkomo had its tenure expire on December 31 last year, but the mining concern management seem content with the leaders that took the club to the Premiership and a vote-of-confidence is likely to be passed on the executive next Wednesday.

Metallon Gold Zimbabwe human resources manager Ushendibaba Madume and mine manager Peter Traquino on Friday confirmed the AGM, but said they would not like to see the smooth flow of the club disrupted.

Management will sit as the board of directors of the club.

Outgoing chairman Nkomo, likely to be retained as head of the team, confirmed next Wednesday’s meeting to map the way forward for the 2013 preparations.

“Our constitution requires two weeks’ notice to the AGM and that has been done and it will be held on January 16. We will hold elections on the day, but a number of stakeholders were impressed with the running of the club and are of the feeling that it is unnecessary to rock the boat at this critical stage. It is a feeling from a number of people that the current executive should lead the team in its maiden season in the Premiership,” Nkomo said.

Madume called for support from other Premiership clubs in Bulawayo, which are Highlanders and Chicken Inn.

Taquino had this to say: “The Premiership is a completely uphill philosophy in terms of budget. The team will continue to be professional. We would like to congratulate the team and all those that have won individual awards. Let’s not go down in history to be one of the teams to be kicked out in our first season in the Premiership.”

Although the cash prizes for the awards that were held at How Mine Country Club were not revealed on Friday evening, goalkeeper Nonjabulo Dube dominated the awards after he scooped the Player of the Year and Most Consistent Player awards. The Players’ Player of the Year went to Nelson Tachi while skipper Stephen Sibanda, who found the net 11 times, walked away with the Top Goal-scorer award.

Colleen Mbewe grabbed the Most Disciplined Player of the Year honours while the Most Promising Player of the Year award went to Stephen Chirwa. Emmanuel Silinda, who scored the winner that elevated the gold miners to the Premiership against Black Boots three minutes before full time, was aptly capped with the Season’s Moment of Brilliance award.

The low-key awards ceremony was attended by Zifa Southern Region secretary Brian Moyo, Highlanders and Chicken Inn secretaries Andrew Tapela and Tavengwa Hara, among other dignitaries.
