LUPANE – A man from Mzola village in Jotsholo has been convicted for criminal defamation after he claimed during a traditional court hearing, that a married woman asked to have sex with him in return for a $100 payment.

Busani Ncube (20) made the claims after he was taken to court on charges of selling a fellow villager’s cow and converting the money to his own use.

On Thursday, Ncube   pleaded guilty to criminal defamation  when he appeared before Lupane resident magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba.

The court   convicted and remanded him in custody to January 7 for sentence.

Public prosecutor Sanders Sibanda told the court that on September 10 last year, Ncube was summoned to the local headman Venis Matshazi’s court for questioning after he failed to account for the money he had raised after selling his fellow villager’s cow.

The court heard that Ncube told the traditional court that he had paid part of the money to the complainant, a 31-year-old married woman whose name cannot be mentioned to protect  her identity, after they got intimate.

Ncube said he gave $100 to the woman after she seduced him and allegedly demanded payment for the service.

He also told the elders that he had given the woman $50 so that she could propose love to a local girl on his behalf.

On October 6 last year, Ncube was also summoned to Chief Mabhikwa’s traditional court to answer for the same charge and he repeated what he said at the headman’s court.

However, the woman denied the allegations and instead reported Ncube to police for defaming her.
