Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company Southern Region marketing officer Edward Nyoni said the power utility had covered more than 80% of households with conventional meters.

“In Gweru, we have installed 10 300 prepaid meters to date and this covers 85 to 90% of households with conventional meters,” he said.

“We expect the project to resume next week with the South African contractor supplying and installing the meters.”

Nyoni said residents in the city welcomed the installation of prepaid meters as they had control over their power consumption.

Nyoni said the long queues that characterised the registering of customers with prepaid meters was now a thing of the past as additional machines had been acquired.

“When we started we had one machine to re-register customers on prepaid meters from the old system. Now there are six machines and no queues at all,” he said.
