CHINHOYI — A Delta Beverages Chinhoyi branch employee who was recently arrested on allegations of theft of $17 000 was this week convicted of the crime. Own Correspondent

Takundwa Matewu (31) of Ruvimbo suburb in Chinhoyi, who was employed as an administration clerk, appeared before magistrate Ngoni Nduna on Tuesday and was remanded in custody to January 31 for sentence after his conviction.

The case against Matewu was that on September 14 last year, his superiors conducted a routine spot check and discovered that he had $39 770 cash.

The court heard that the money was meant to pay off creditors. On the said day, his financial records, including the cash disbursement book, were certified correct.

It was heard in court that between September 14 and 21, Matewu during the course of his duties withdrew various amounts of cash held in trust from the company’s cash office using debit notes serial numbers 065715, 065716 and 065717.

He disbursed the money through company requisition forms with serial numbers ranging from 1167 to 1260.

It was further heard that on September 21, Delta Beverages’ internal auditors, acting on a tip-off, conducted a spot check and unearthed that Matewu had only $11 in the safe.

Investigations by the auditors established that he had fraudulently withdrawn $17 875 which he failed to account for.

The prosecution established that Matewu converted the money to his own use.
