A 16-year-old boy from Hwange was killed by a crocodile at the Zambezi River while fishing on New Year’s Day. Report by Pamela Mhlanga Own Correspondent
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube told NewsDay yesterday that the incident happened at around 7pm.
“Respect Mwinde (16), who stays with Boy Muchimba under Chief Sinamsango in Binga, went to the Zambezi River in the evening of New Year’s Day in the company of his younger brother to check his fishing nets,” he said.
Dube said when the two boys got to the river, Mwinde got into the water where he was attacked by the crocodile.
“When Mwinde’s younger brother realised that a crocodile was attacking his brother, he immediately ran to alert Muchimba, who immediately rushed to the scene,” he said.
Dube said upon his arrival at the river, Muchimba found Mwinde trying to break free.
He picked stones and hit the crocodile until it lessened its grip and let Mwinde free.
Mwinde was rushed to Chatunga Clinic where he was referred to Siabuwa Clinic, but died upon arrival.

A report was made to the police at Siabuwa.
Police who attended the scene have since ruled out any foul play.
Dube advised the public to desist from venturing into crocodile-infested rivers as that could result in loss of lives.
He also warned the public to desist from illegal fishing.
