In a statement yesterday, Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo said the public must generally be aware of the potential dangers posed by heavy rains.
“The general public is advised to make an effort to know their local weather patterns, monitor water levels in their environs, take necessary precautions on the roads by driving at safe speed and be generally aware of prevailing hazards,” he said.
“Vehicle drivers, school children and the public should desist from crossing flooded rivers or low-lying bridges.
“People should quickly move to higher ground if they notice that their area is becoming flooded.
“The general public and schools are advised to invest in swimming courses to prevent drowning.”
Last month, Tsholotsho district in Matabeleland North was hit by flash floods which sparked fear among villagers in low-lying areas.
Tsholotsho is a flood-prone area just like Muzarabani in Mashonaland Central.

However, residents in Bulawayo are praying for rain as the city’s supply dams have run dry leaving them to put up with a 96 hours per week water-shedding schedule.
Chombo further warned that the public must ensure use of safe water in order to prevent water-borne and water-based diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria and bilharzia.
The minister also warned the public to guard against lightning strikes.
