Mountain Mudimba (31) pleaded guilty to assaulting Prince Shiri when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu.
The magistrate convicted and sentenced him to three years in jail.
One year of the sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that on December 31, Mudimba and Prince, along with other villagers, were drinking beer at Kariangwe business centre while waiting to celebrate the start of the new year.
At 12 midnight when all the people started celebrating, Mudimba suddenly confronted the boy claiming he had provoked him.
The boy tried to run away, but Mudimba allegedly picked a log which he threw and hit the former in the head.
