BINGA — A man from Kariangwe area will spend the next two years in jail for striking a 15-year-old boy with a log leaving him unconscious in a dispute over an unspecified issue on New Year’s Day.
Mountain Mudimba (31) pleaded guilty to assaulting Prince Shiri when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu.
The magistrate convicted and sentenced him to three years in jail.
One year of the sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that on December 31, Mudimba and Prince, along with other villagers, were drinking beer at Kariangwe business centre while waiting to celebrate the start of the new year.
At 12 midnight when all the people started celebrating, Mudimba suddenly confronted the boy claiming he had provoked him.
The boy tried to run away, but Mudimba allegedly picked a log which he threw and hit the former in the head.
Prince fell unconscious and sustained head injuries as a result of the attack.
He was taken to Binga Rural District Hospital where he is still admitted and is in a stable condition.
When asked why he attacked the boy, Mudimba said Prince had provoked him.
“He provoked me,” he told the court. “He was drunk. When I charged at him, he ran away and I threw a log at him.”
Bruce Maphosa prosecuted.
