SUNGURA musician Nicholas Zakaria says he would not participate in the Batai Munhu Concert to be held at the Aquatic Complex on Friday.

Report by Tawanda Marwizi

Zakaria told NewsDay that he was not satisfied with the performance fee he was offered by the promoter and has opted to go and perform in Rusape on that day.

The sungura godfather was supposed to share the stage with Sulumani Chimbetu, man-of-the-moment Jah Prayzah and the Dembo brothers, Morgan and Tendai.

“They offered us very little money as compared to other artists who are going to perform at the event, which I felt was not proper,” said Zakaria.

He, however, said he had no personal issues with the promoter, Josh Hozheri of Jazz 105.

“I was not happy with the money they offered and I will not be part of the crew because I will be travelling to Rusape on that day,” he said.

Contrary to what the musician said, Hozheri said he had a valid contract with Zakaria.

“They have already signed contracts and for now they have not communicated with me raising concern over anything,” said Hozheri. He said he would only take action if the musician fails to turn up for the show.

“There is a contract so if they fail to perform we will take it from there.

“I am not prepared to start a wrangle with Madzibaba because I have so much respect for him.”

Turning to the name of the Concert Hozheri said they called it Batai Munhu because of the popularity of Chimbetu’s song Sean Timba that carries the phrase.

“It is becoming an anthem in bars, kombis and everywhere so the people have called us saying we should call it that,” said Hozheri. “This is a promotional show and we want these young stars to break new ground.”
