SPEAKER of Parliament Lovemore Moyo yesterday ruled out foul play following the death of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development deputy minister Seiso Moyo, saying he succumbed to a heart problem.

Report by Khanyile Mlotshwa

Moyo died at a private Harare hospital on Friday and was buried at Lady Stanely Cemetery in Bulawayo yesterday at a funeral attended by politicians from across the political divide.

The MDC-T chairman told mourners at the Lutheran Church in Tshabalala, saying the family had given him permission to speak about the cause of the Nketa MP’s death.

He said the family wanted to set the record straight.

“When we went to Parirenyatwa Hospital for the post mortem, the pathologists explained to us what really took him,” Moyo said.

“There was no poisoning. The doctors told us that his heart had swelled. They said a normal heart weighs 200 grammes, but his was weighing 600 grammes, and was full of water.”

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, speaking at the same occasion, urged politicians to go for regular medical check-ups.

“My humble submissions are that we all work so hard and in the process we fail to take care of our health,” he said.

“I think politicians in this country must  be checked at least once a year. Maybe they could have picked this up.”

Tsvangirai described the deputy minister as one of the few politicians who were humble and always ready to serve Zimbabweans. “I knew that Honourable Moyo was strong and that he would bring development to the region,” he said.

“I ask the family and all of you to be strong. We all have to be strong and carry the load that is ahead of us.”

Other prominent politicians who were at the burial include Finance minister  Tendai Biti, Mines and Mining Development minister Obert Mpofu, Small and Medium Enterprises minister Sithembiso Nyoni and Bulawayo mayor Thaba Moyo.
