A 40-year-old man from Senga suburb in Gweru has been slapped with an effective 15-year jail term for raping his nine-year-old daughter.

Report by Stephen Chadenga Own Correspondent

The man (who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child) was initially sentenced to 18 years in jail before regional magistrate Mark Dzira conditionally suspended three years of the sentence. The court heard that on a date unknown to the State, but during the period between December 2011 and February 2012, the girl was at home with his father. The complainant — a Grade Three pupil — was sleeping on the floor while her father slept on the bed in the same room.

Her father called her to join him in bed and she complied before he raped her. The man repeated the abuse later on that same night and ordered her not to disclose the matter to anyone.

However, the matter came to light after police were tipped off by an anonymous caller.

A medical report produced in court confirmed the abuse.

Fred Kadodo prosecuted.
