FORMER MDC MP for Bulilima East, Norman Mpofu, has been summoned to appear in court on Wednesday for allegedly labelling Zanu PF a “government of thieves and murderers”.

Richard Muponde Senior Court Reporter According to a copy of the summons, Mpofu is charged with contravening section 41 (b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (disorderly conduct in a public place) after he made the alleged offensive remarks while addressing mourners at the burial of an MDC-T activist in Plumtree last month.

“You are hereby required and directed on the sight hereof to summon Norman Mpofu that he appear personally before the court of the magistrate at Plumtree Court on the 19th day of December 2012 at 08.00 o’clock to answer and abide by the judgment of the court arising from the following charges C/S 41 (b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9.23 (disorderly conduct in a public place),” read the summons for the Plumtree Criminal Investigation Department Law and Order Section.

The matter was initially supposed to go to trial on November 7, but was deferred after police indicated they were still carrying out investigations.

Mpofu was arrested on November 2 in Plumtree and was only released the next day following the intervention of his lawyer Nontokozo Dube-Tachiwona.

Mpofu has since denied the charge.
