MINIENHLE Mkweli — widow of the late sungura maestro Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo — and the late musician’s close friend, Kwekwe businessman Barmet Mutosvori, are suing a local daily publication for $2 million over allegations that they were lovers and that she was pregnant.

Mkweli and Mutosvori are suing The Herald, claiming the story published in last Saturday’s edition was defamatory and insinuated that she had cheated on her late husband.

The two are being represented by Tendai Masawi of Masawi&Partners.

“The whole article is defamatory of our clients, and it imputes that Minienhle was cheating on her late husband and she got impregnated by Mr Mutosvori.

“Our clients deny that they are married as alleged. Furthermore and in any event, Minienhle is not pregnant as alleged,” reads part of their letter of demand, written yesterday.

“We are instructed to demand, as we hereby do, payment in the sum of $2 million being $1 million each (for Mkweli and Mutosvori).”

In an interview with NewsDay, Mkweli insisted she was not pregnant and was willing to undergo a pregnancy test to prove her case.

“Here I am out in the open, not pregnant and I am willing to go to doctors for a pregnancy test just to prove that all those media reports were lies,” said Mkweli.

She said it was true that she was in a relationship with someone, but not Mutosvori and her man was aware of her friendship with the businessman even before Moyo’s death.

Mutosvori weighed in: “Some have even gone as far as claiming that before his death, Tongai suspected me of cheating with his wife. But that’s not true. Tongai was too frank to keep his suspicions from me and I was there with him until his last day,” he said.
