HIGHLANDERS missed out on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title despite victory over Blue Rangers at Gwanzura Stadium yesterday after eventual winners Dynamos drew at Hardbody.

The Bulawayo giants, just like their arch-rivals, finished the season on 69 points, but fell short on mere goal difference.

Dynamos finished the season with a plus 44 goal difference against Highlanders’ 34.

Heritani Masuku’s header just after the hour mark and a rising shot from Soccer Star of the Year hopeful Masimba Mambare on 78th minute ensured Highlanders got a $50 000 cheque and silver medals. There was something to cheer about for Highlanders after all. Their players literally swept all the Player of the Month awards voted in by the soccer writers.

Masimba Mambare, one of the four Highlanders players that were voted on the Soccer Stars 11 finalists last Saturday, got the award for the months of July, August and September. Mthulisi Maphosa and Ariel Sibanda were also voted the best player for the month of June and goalkeeper of the month for October respectively.

Mambare was back again on the podium receiving another accolade for the top goal scorer of the month for August.

Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu hailed his players for pushing Dynamos all the way and vowed his team would come back stronger next season.

“We did our very best. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get the championship, but I must point out that the boys did very well. I think it is God who planned the way things have ended,” said Kaindu.
