ZVISHAVANE — Zvishavane Town Council chairman Alewis Zhou, who was among the 12 councillors fired by the MDC-T two months ago over allegations of corruption, has challenged his expulsion.

Zhou has since written to MDC-T party chairman Lovemore Moyo challenging his dismissal from the party.

“My hands are clean and have always been clean as now proven by competent courts following acquittal on all allegations of corruption which were directed against me.

I therefore wonder how my party found me guilty of these allegations when I had been cleared by the courts,” wrote Zhou in a letter to Moyo.

In response, Moyo initially invited Zhou to a disciplinary hearing on September 8, but later suspended the hearing indefinitely.

Zhou was expelled by the MDC-T alongside 11 other councillors from different local authorities in August over allegations of corruption. Zhou was charged with looting council coffers by claiming dubious allowances and engaging in shady land deals.

He was taken to court over the allegations and suspended from office by Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo before being fired from the MDC-T.

He has since been acquitted by the courts, but remains suspended from council and fired from his party.
