Former Zimbabwe Saints Board of Trustees secretary and Bulawayo businessman Sakhiwe “Sakhi” Ndlovu was laid to rest at West Park Cemetery yesterday.

Ndlovu, 48, passed away at Mater Dei Hospital at midnight on Wednesday from an undisclosed illness.

Members of the business community and a few from the football fraternity including family members and friends thronged West Park Cemetery to pay their last respects to the well-known socialite.

A member of the family Alvin Ndlovu apologised to colleagues who were not aware of the burial day, saying a decision was arrived at after family members made some undisclosed considerations.

“We would like to apologise sincerely to his friends that could not come to the burial, which had been meant for Sunday (tomorrow). We looked at a lot of variables and thought it was necessary that he be buried today ( yesterday).

Please take no offence. We would like to pay tribute to his business partners particularly from Broadacom that have contributed to his burial and to all his friends that are here and the pastors,” Ndlovu said.

Among those who attended the burial was former Zimbabwe Saints physical trainer Roger Russell, who was deeply moved by the passing away of Sakhi.

“I have been helping in the restructuring of the Zimbabwe Saints executive and I was looking forward to working with Sakhi in that direction. All I can say is that the strongest part of a man that he needs when he is down is to get up and that is what is happening at Zimbabwe Saints and we needed a guy like Sakhi to do that. His death has been a major setback. He made meaningful and strategic contributions at annual general meetings and even contributed financially. We will miss him big time. May people have benefited in business even if it was at his expense and loss,” Russell said.

Sakhi, a popular figure in Bulawayo, who was once married to former Studio 263 actress Tinopona Katsande, was born in Kwekwe on January 12 in 1964.

At the time of his death, Sakhi was an executive officer at Broadacom.

Among the personalities that attended were Russell, former Sundowns Football Club directors Gift Banda and Eddie Chivero, former Warriors and Highlanders striker Zenzo Moyo, Highlanders manager Amin Soma-Phiri, Zifa Southern Region official Augustine Ndlovu, actress and modelling coach Sarah Mpofu of the Makorokoza fame, socialite, entertainer and disc jockey Babongile Skhonjwa and Broadacom executives.
