A 25-year-old woman from Savanhu village, Seke, has appeared in court facing assault charges after she allegedly bit her tenant’s lips following a brawl over rental arrears.

Hilda Musama, however, denied the charge of intentionally biting her tenant Bethel Jaji’s lips when she appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Rumbi Mugwagwa on Wednesday.

She told the court she only did so in self-defence after she felt she was being overpowered during the scuffle. The State alleged that on July 30 this year, Musama’s husband identified as William Charakupa forcibly removed Jaji’s household goods from a room she was renting after she failed to pay the $10 she allegedly owed.

Musama later intervened after Jaji resisted the eviction order, resulting in a fistfight.

In the ensuing melee, the landlady bit her tenant’s lips and injured her.

A medical report produced in court showed that Jaji sustained serious injuries as a result of the attack. The court remanded Musama on free bail to August 21. Lovert Muringwa prosecuted.
