A police officer stationed at Marimba Police Station in Harare has been brought before the courts facing murder charges after he allegedly fatally assaulted his 28-year-old wife after she came home drunk in June.

Aideni Mutambarikani (39) of Amalinda Farm in Chivero appeared before Mbare magistrate Reuben Mukavhi on Thursday who remanded him in custody.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court. Prosecutor Lawrence Gangarawe told the court that on June 24, Mutambarikani arrived home from work and found his wife Evelyn Bharura away.

Mutambarikani allegedly waited for more than 40 minutes before his wife returned drunk.

In a fit of rage, he allegedly assaulted his wife with wooden sticks in the face and buttocks before taking an iron bar with which he further assaulted her.

Bharura died after two weeks from the injuries and her post mortem report indicated that she died due to injuries sustained.

The trial is expected to start on August 23.
