A Good Samaritan turned villain after he allegedly raped a woman he had offered help by carrying her luggage after she disembarked from a bus along the Bulawayo -Victoria Falls Road in Nyamandlovu.

Jealous Phiri (45) of Mimosa Farm in Nyamandlovu was not asked to plead to rape charges when he briefly appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Victor Mpofu sitting at Nyamandlovu Circuit Court.

He was remanded in custody to August 16 for trial at Bulawayo Regional Court and was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.

Charges against him are on July 20 he met the complainant who had just disembarked from a bus on her way to her homestead in Nyamandlovu.

He offered to help her carry her luggage as she was also strapping a baby on her back.

When they were about five kilometres from woman’s homestead, Phiri told the woman that he was turning back and gave her back her luggage. The woman continued with her journey but after walking for a few metres, Phiri turned back and approached her from behind.

He grabbed her and dragged her into the bush threatening to kill her.

Phiri forced her to lie down, muffling her baby and raped her once.

After raping her, he left the scene leaving her to proceed with her journey.

When she arrived home, she narrated her ordeal to her husband and a police report was made. Investigations led to Phiri’s arrest and he was positively identified by the complainant.
