Former Kariba town clerk George Makunde is now the new substantive Chitungwiza town clerk taking over from Godfrey Tanyanyiwa who was fired from the local authority on allegations of rampant corruption and mismanagement.
Benjamin Gwenzi from the Public Works ministry becomes the new housing director replacing Jemina Gumbo who was also fired for corruption, while the new director of health services is Gloria Gonese.
“I am happy about the progress posted in terms of normalising the administration of the municipality. The recruitment process by the Local Government Board is complete,” Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo said yesterday.
According to Chombo, the new team was supposed to have started work on Wednesday. He said the office bearers for other vacant posts, including that of chamber secretary, would be announced soon.
The new team replaces the Chombo-appointed resuscitation team led by Manicaland provincial administrator Fungai Mbetsa that had been in charge for the last seven months.
Early this year, Chombo appointed the Mbetsa-led team to look into allegations of rampant corruption and abuse of office in the town.
The cleaning-up exercise has seen six councillors being suspended and were being probed while several managers were fired.
The Mbetsa-led team had come under fire from councillors and residents who felt they were fleecing the cash-strapped local authority, having received over $500 000 since they came into office.
