A 32-year-old Nyanga man who was on the police wanted list committed suicide last Wednesday by drinking a pesticide after realising that the long arm of the law was about to catch up with him.

Pedzisai Sachiwo (32) drank the pesticide after his mother alerted him that police were closing in on both of them over a crime they reportedly committed together.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri confirmed the incident and took a swipe at criminals who resorted to suicide.

It is understood that on the fateful day Sachiwo returned from a beer-drinking binge at Sabvuri shopping centre in Nyanga at around 8pm, and his mother told him police details had been looking for both of them in connection with the crime. In fear, Sachiwo reportedly went into his bedroom where he drank the pesticide.

“After drinking the pesticide, Sachiwo told his mother that he had decided to end his life because he could not stand the heat of law enforcement agents who were pursuing him,” Chishiri said.

His mother reportedly tried to render first aid, but it was too late as Sachiwo died moments later.
