GWERU — A male inmate at Whawha Prison in Gweru appeared in court yesterday facing charges of sodomising a fellow inmate in exchange for a packet of unprocessed tobacco.

The court heard the incident involving Samson Sithole and Clemence Mbuzi occurred inside a shared prison cell at Whawha Prison on August 24, 2009.

Sithole and Mbuzi were both charged with sodomy.

According to State allegations as presented before magistrate Mildred Matuvi, on the day in question a prisoner identified as Robert Mapfumo broke into a cell where Sithole and Mbuzi stayed and found them having anal sex.

Mapfumo then locked the cell door from outside and alerted prison officers on duty at the complex. The officers immediately arrested Sithole and Mbuzi and took them to a prison hospital where it was confirmed that Mbuzi had been sodomised.

Upon interrogation, Mbuzi allegedly claimed Sithole had promised him a packet of unprocessed tobacco in exchange for agreeing to have sex.

Soon after the incident, Sithole allegedly broke out of the prison complex, but was later arrested.

The two are set to reappear in court on August 8 for trial.

Stancelous Nyemba prosecuted.
