The launch of Zambezi News, a satirical comedy sketch that takes on stories — fiction and real — giving them a comical twist, is set for tonight at the Bang Bang Comedy Club, Red Bar in Newlands, Harare, where the first two episodes of the comedy will be premiered.

The set–up is of a news cast reporting on random stories and follows the success of its initial showing at the Zimbabwe International Film Festival 2011.

Local artists Comrade Fatso and Tongai Makawa, aka Outspoken, decided to follow up on the showing with a much bigger production.

“Zambezi News is the breakthrough new comedy series that has had audiences in Zimbabwe and abroad in stitches since its launch last year and this brand new season will feature the comical news presenters Mandape Mandape (Outspoken), Jerome Weathers (Comrade Fatso) and Kudzaishe Mushayahembe (Michael Kudakwashe), who will be presenting live in studio, while also cutting away ludicrous reports, spoof music videos and cheeky adverts,” Outspoken said.

He said some trailers of Zambezi News had already been released on YouTube in the build–up to the launch and the clips included the hilarious hip-hop crew, The Even Mo Lil Swaggery Boyz, as well as some featuring the forever drunk Anonymous Alcoholics and the roving reporter Kephas Josfat.Outspoken added that the first season would be cast nationwide and episodes would appear on regional satellite television.

“The film is designed for all ages as it is pretty much intended as ‘normal’ news gone haywire and its influential reach is the same, but the effect remaining experimental,” he said. The evening will also feature performances by celebrated comedians Edgar Langeveldt and Q The Boss and free Zambezi News DVDs will be distributed to those in attendance.
