Swimming ace Kirsty Coventry arrived in London on Monday night to join up with Zimbabwe’s Olympic team ahead of Friday’s official opening of the 2012 games.

Coventry and her American coach Kim Brackin have been in Paris, France, for nearly a month preparing for the Olympics.Kirsty, who turns 29 in September, won seven medals for her country in her last two appearances at the Athens and Beijing Olympics — three golds and four silvers.

In London, she is entered for the 100m backstroke, the 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley events.

Just as she did in Beijing, Coventry will be Zimbabwe’s flag bearer at the official opening on Friday night.

Olympic team media attaché Imelda Shoko said from London yesterday:

“Kirsty arrived late last night (Monday) and she has only started training this afternoon (yesterday). She was coming from France where she was training.

“The rowers, Micheen Thornycroft and Jamie Fraser Mackenzie are based at the Rowing Village which is about 40km from the main Games Village.

They are all happy with the training and the weather is fine for swimming and rowing. It is sunny and quite hot though. Chris Felgate will only be arriving tomorrow (today).”

The rest of Team Zimbabwe — comprising six athletes and officials — arrived in London on Saturday.

Coventry was to meet up with marathon runners Cuthbert Nyasango, Sharon Tavengwa and Wirimayi Zhuwawo.
