Losing MDC-T candidate for Redcliff constituency, lawyer Tapera Sengweni, has been arrested on three counts of stocktheft and one count of abusing trust funds.

His lawyer Prayers Chitsa told NewsDay yesterday that Sengweni was arrested last Thursday after police found 10 stolen cattle at his Redcliff plot.

“Sengweni is currently in police custody after three people, one from Silobela, others from Nkayi and Zhombe, reported to the police their cattle had gone missing, but were later found at his plot,” Chitsa said.

Sengweni faces another charge of stealing $12 794 from Nicholas Masuku of Mbizo.

According to State papers, Masuku on June 16 2010 hired Sengweni to collect a debt of $27 294 from Zedics Newe following a sale of a mine between Masuku and Newe.

The State alleged that after collecting the money from Newe, Sengweni only handed over $14 500 to Masuku and converted the balance to his own use.

“Newe has produced receipts showing that he paid the money to Sengweni, but that money never reached Masuku,” the police said.

Kwekwe police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Lawrence Machingura said Sengweni would appear in court soon to answer to the charges.

Chitsa said his client was denying charges levelled against him.
