Following their success in the 2012 A and B Triangular Series Trophy on Wednesday, local female golfers will be hoping to continue doing well when they tee off in the Zimbabwe Open Ladies’ Strokeplay Championship at Chapman Golf Club this morning.

The Zimbabwe Open Ladies’ Strokeplay Championship has attracted a record 97 entries.

They have been divided into four divisions, namely the championship, the A, B and C divisions.

Local players will be confident after getting the better of players from Botswana and Zambia in both the A and B divisions of the bi-annual triangular team competition.

The Zimbabwe teams, which were under the guidance of coach Cathy Riley amassed 18 and 19 points in both the A and B divisions respectively, to defeat Zambia, who had 14 and 12 points respectively.

Zimbabwe Ladies’ Golf Union public relations officer Evelyn Maisvoreva said the A and B Triangular series had been a success and all was set for the start of the national open which promises to be exciting.

“The A and B Triangular series was definitely a success and the competition was good. Attention has now shifted to the Zimbabwe Open Ladies’ Strokeplay Championship which also promises to be an exciting event. By close of entries, a record 97 from Zimbabwe, Uganda, Zambia and Botswana had entered the tournament,” said Maisvoreva.

“The players have been divided into four divisions based on their handicaps. We have 16 players in the championship division, 27 in the A division and 37 and 19 players in the B and C divisions respectively, ” she said.

Zimbabwe has the highest number of entries with 63 players, while Zambia has 21 players. Botswana and Uganda will be represented by 11 and two players respectively.

Top Zimbabwe female player Claire Minter is the defending champion and will be the favourite to successfully defend her title.
