When Harare-based 21-year-old model, Chiedza Mukucha failed to impress in the Miss Zimbabwe 2011 and the Miss Mashonaland West 2012 pageants, her dreams where shattered. She felt hopeless and told herself that she would never take part in any pageants again, as the highest level she had managed to get to was the Miss Legs title at the Model Extravaganza in 2009.

Mukucha thought she had had enough in three years, until a friend Pauline Mushambe encouraged her to make another try in the latest online pageant G-Tel Face of Zimbabwe (FOZ), where she was recently crowned Miss June. She least expected it, she said.

“I feel so good to have a breakthrough at a point when I’d lost all hope and I’m grateful to my friends Tanaka Gavaza, Johannes Nyamayedenga and Elvin Matizamhuka, who took their time to help me set up my website and search for the votes that made me who I am today,” an excited Mukucha said.

The dark chocolate-tanned skin, giraffe height and short “kinky” and untreated-haired Mukucha is bound to make waves on the international stage.

“I’m already working on a project called the ‘Chiedza Makucha Trust’ where I’m focusing on helping the girl child by providing sanitary wear for the disadvantaged and assisting teenage mothers on how to best take care of their babies, among other issues,” Mukucha said.

She said her project will be launched at her rural home in Mhondoro to assist her disadvantaged personal friends.

The Glen View-based beauty said what she loved the most about herself was her originality, having an identity and comfort in her own skin, especially her short hair, unlike many models who were keen on Western trends like artificial hair.

Mukucha is the first born in a family of five. She is also a Travel and Tourism student who recently signed up at the Catherine Ruze modelling agency, after having been under Zim Gossip modelling agency since 2009.

Mukucha will compete with the other finalists for the Face of Zimbabwe Crown on December 15.
