Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has scoffed at reports that Zanu PF has set up a national land audit team, saying the exercise cannot be done outside government processes.
According to reports, the Zanu PF team, made up of Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo and his Lands counterpart Herbert Murerwa as well as other senior Zanu PF officials, will visit all provinces to check land utilisation and double allocations.
But in a statement on Wednesday, Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said the exercise had not been sanctioned by government.
“The Prime Minister notes with concern that some ministers in government will be embarking on a partisan land audit outside the government processes,” he said.
“The Global Political Agreement, which is now part of the Constitution, obligates government to audit land.” He said Zimbabweans were interested in a proper land audit, which was expected to expose multiple and non-productive farm owners.
Tsvangirai said he expected Murerwa to come up with a proper land audit as stipulated by the law.
