Sparrows Athletics Club junior athlete Kenneth Chibwana clocked 10,64secs in the 100m event during the Provincial Athletics Championships at National University of Science and Technology (Nust) over the weekend.

Chibwana, who was in the Under-20 category, was followed home by Nkosilathi Ncube, also from Sparrows, who clocked 10,84secs.

Independent athlete Zuva Bvekerwa romped home first in the senior men’s 100m in 10,98secs before clocking 22,07secs in the 200m.

Selby Mukucha from Harare Slac Athletics Club was second in the 100m finishing the race in 11,06secs while Nkosilathi Ndlovu (Sparrows) came third in 11,16secs — all slow times recorded by the athletes.

Yvonne Vanhuvanomwe (Sparrows) was first in the Under-20 girls section 100m. She clocked 12,51secs in the 100m race while clubmate Thenjiwe Sibanda was in position two in a time of 13,31secs.

Tonderai Mandiziva (Slac) romped home first in the Under-18 boys’ 100m. Mandiziva clocked 11,17secs while Jason Jangwani from Nyasha Charandura Academy was second in 11,34secs.

Slac’s Farai Chabvamuperu was first in the Under-20 boys javelin with a 44,10m throw and excelled in the shot put with a 12,39m toss. Independent athlete Tatenda Shumba’s leap of 4,87m in the senior men’s long jump earned him first place.

Bulawayo Athletics Board secretary-general Dailes Bingadadi was impressed with the competition.

“We are happy with some of the times the athletes posted. Some of the junior athletes were using the competition to prepare for the Zimbabwe National Youth Games which are coming up next month. It was good practice for them,” she said.
