The Kunzvi Dam project, viewed as the panacea to Harare and satellite towns’ perennial water woes, is unlikely to take off anytime soon, NewsDay has learnt.

Even government that is supposed to lead in the construction process does not know when the multi-million dollar project will be started.

Water Resources Management and Development minister Samuel Sipepa Nkomo was yesterday non-committal saying: “I can’t give anything now as I think there are certain things being made. We have roped in a Chinese company on that project and we are in the process of finalising with that company.”

Asked on when the project was likely to commence, Nkomo said: “No, I can’t give the actual date because of those changes. This is a new element which has come and I really cannot. You will have to wait until we make an official statement.”

Earlier this year, Nkomo promised Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai that all was set for the project, but up until now, nothing seems to be moving.

At least $540 million is required for the Kunzvi project which is set to add 250 megalitres to the available 600 megalitres that the capital city is pumping from Morton Jaffray Waterworks to supply Harare, Chitungwiza and Norton.
