Organisers of Chimanimani Arts Festival, due to be held from 10-12 August, today hold an fundraising at Alliance Française, 128 Herbert Chitepo Street, Harare. Festival director Chido Musasiwa-Gutu said the event is sponsored by the European Union.

Two sculptures titled Judge and Chikwambo, donated by world-renowned sculptor Lazarus Takawira, will be among artefacts up for grabs at the event.

Takawira has held exhibitions in numerous countries among them the US, Poland, Belgium and Scandinavia.

His speciality is sculptures which emphasise the importance of women and the importance of their role in society. They are characterised by an inherent sensuality which the scupltor flawlessly manages to bring out. The pieces are carved from rapidolite — (Judge) a light-grey, polished stone and serpentine (Chikwambo) whose texture clearly highlights the detail on the pieces.

Takawaira’s aesthetics are unique and his pieces are distinct in their symmetry, line and shape which are inimitable.

“The aim of the auction is to raise funds to pay artists who will be performing at the festival and to cover artists’ accommodation and travel costs,” said Musasiwa-Gutu.

Chimanimani Arts Festival is the country’s biggest annual free-entry festival.

It provides residents of Manicaland Province with an opportunity to be exposed to various arts genres such as theatre, music, spoken word, modern and traditional dance, acrobatics, visual art and drumming.

Festival-goers are also offered skills training at workshops held during the festival. They interact with leading artists while enjoying high-level entertainment which they would not normally get a chance to experience.
