A senior Zanu PF official in Nkayi has appeared in court facing charges of possession of marijuana (mbanje) after the banned substance dropped from her daughter’s satchel at school.

The child said she got the drug from her mother’s bedroom.

Sithabile Ndebele (49), who is represented by Matshobana Ncube, appeared before Nkayi magistrate Ndumo Masuku on Monday and was not asked to plead to charges of possession of mbanje.

The Zanu PF district co-ordinating committee member was remanded out of custody to July 17 on $100 bail.

As part of her bail conditions, Ndebele was ordered not to interfere with potential witnesses until the case was finalised.

The state led by Maxwell Hapanyengwi told the court that on June 15, the daughter’s schoolmate borrowed her satchel to carry his books.

While in class a plastic bag full of mbanje fell from the satchel and was noticed by other students who informed the school authorities.

The boy was later taken to Nkayi police station for investigations where he revealed that he found the dagga in the girl’s satchel.

The girl in turn told police that she got the dagga from her mother’s bedroom.

It is the court case that while the pupils were still at the police station, Ndebele arrived in a fit of rage and allegedly shouted at the police for arresting her daughter.

A search at her house led to the recovery of more mbanje weighing 100 grammes from her bedroom.
