Three jailbirds accused of robbing a Bangladeshi national who had travelled for a consultancy programme with a local mobile telephone firm, Telecel, were last week on Friday shot and injured by police while allegedly resisting arrest.

The ex-convicts, who made off with goods valued at $2 138, were not asked to plead when Harare magistrate Anita Tshuma remanded them in custody on their hospital beds at Parirenyatwa Hospital yesterday. Canaan Madamombe (40) of Chitungwiza, George Timozo (37) and Samson Goreraza (43), both of Harare, were shot and injured last week. The court heard that the three men were trapped and arrested by police detectives as they attempted to sell the stolen goods. Prosecutor Ellen Mokora presented that the arrested trio allegedly connived to rob Bhuiyan Mizanur Rahman (46), who had visited Zimbabwe on consultancy work with the mobile phone operator. The court heard the alleged gang drove a BMW sedan owned by Madamombe and proceeded to Harare International Airport where Rahman was to be picked up by a Telecel official driver, Maxwell Mhaka. It is further alleged when they arrived at the airport, they deflated the rear left tyre of the Telecel vehicle which had been parked. The court also heard that when Mhaka and Rahman left the airport en route to a local hotel, they were trailed by the gang. It is alleged upon arrival at the intersection of George and Airport roads in Hatfield, Mhaka realised that he had a flat tyre and stopped the vehicle for a wheel change. The court heard that the gang suddenly emerged, with one of them wielding a knife and threatened to stab Rahman before robbing him of his goods. After stealing the goods, the gang then proceeded to Goromonzi where they were tracked and shot by police officers after resisting arrest.
