Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai will tie the knot with his newly-found love Elizabeth Macheka on September 15, it was revealed yesterday.
Close sources within Tsvangirai’s MDC-T party told NewsDay the Premier, who lost his first wife in a car accident in 2009, had set the Saturday date for the white wedding with the 35-year-old Macheka.
But his spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said he was not aware of such plans, although the sources maintained Tsvangirai and Macheka would be joining hands in holy matrimony in the next three months.
“I am not aware of those developments yet. I will definitely tell you when such plans are made,” Tamborinyoka said.
However, the sources said plans were at an advanced stage for Tsvangirai’s grand wedding at a venue yet to be announced — most probably in the capital.
The wedding would come exactly five months after the two’s engagement party at an upmarket restaurant along Mutoko Road.
Tsvangirai is already customarily married to Macheka — the daughter of Zanu PF Central Commitee member and former Chitungwiza mayor Joseph Macheka.
Tsvangirai had six children with his late wife.

After the death of Susan, the former labour movement leader had been allegedly linked to several women before he finally settled for Macheka. Six months earlier, the MDC-T leader was forced to halt alleged marriage proceedings with his previous girlfriend, businesswoman Lorcadia Karimatsenga Tembo, a sister of Goromonzi MP Biata Nyamupinga (Zanu PF).
Tsvangirai reportedly sent a delegation to the Karimatsenga family on November 18 last year to pay lobola, but changed his mind after 24 hours saying the relationship had been hijacked by the media and State intelligence agents.
The affair with Karimatsenga led Tsvangirai into an embarrassing public conflict with Chief Lucius Negomo who wanted to fine him for marrying in the traditionally “forbidden month” of November.
The case is still before the Supreme Court. Elizabeth — a widow whose first husband Mabasa Simba Guma died 10 years ago in a car accident — is a businesswoman who is said to own an upmarket beauty salon in Harare.
