Zimbabwean golfer Ignatius Mketekete has qualified for next month’s Indo-Zambia Bank Zambia Open after winning the tournament’s pre-qualifying event held at ERPM Golf Club in Gauteng, South Africa, on Thursday.

The R1,1 million 2012 Indo- Zambia Bank-Zambia Open which is a leg of the Sunshine Tour will be held from June 14 – 17 at Lusaka Golf Club. Mketekete, who is currently a non-exempt player on the tour, had to secure one of the 10 slots which were available in the 32-man field qualifying tournament.

The Zvishavane-born golfer secured his slot in style after firing a three-under-par 69, two shots ahead of second-placed Thabo Maseko from South Africa, who finished on one-under-par 71.

Mketekete finished as the highest placed local golfer at last year’s Zambia Open after finishing in sixth-place ahead of Tongo Charamba, who was tied for 42nd. Hwange Golf Club-based Phillip Tshuma was the other Zimbabwean in the field to qualify for the Zambia Open after finishing on two-over-par 74. Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club-based pro Micky Hough just missed out after also carding a two-over-par 74, in 11th place, but could still qualify as one of the alternates.
