The countrys premier golf tour, the Golden Pilsner Zambezi Tour, is set for a major boost following the entry of mining company Marange Recourses as one of the tours sponsors this season.

The mining company will bankroll the Marange Resources Pro-Am which will take place at Hillside Golf Club in Mutare from May 31-June 2.

With a prize fund of $30 000, the Marange Resources Pro-Am looks set to attract top professionals while the amateurs will also have a chance to compete alongside their fellow pros.

Mike Mahachi, the Zambezi Tour tournament co-ordinator and founding trustee, told NewsDay Sport yesterday that Marange had pledged to sponsor the tournament.

We are delighted to announce that Marange Resources will partner us this year by sponsoring the Marange Resources Pro-Am which will take place at Hillside Golf Club at the end of the month.

This is a positive development for local golf and will certainly take the Zambezi Tour to another level. Entries are now open for those wanting to compete in the tournament and will close on May 18, said Mahachi.

This will not be the first time that Marange Resources are venturing into sport after they unveiled an estimated $3 million sponsorship package for womens football early this year.

The Marange Resources Pro-Am will be the second tournament on the tour after the season-opener, the Mashwede Diesel Open, which was won by Tongo Charamba.

It will, however, be the first local tournament since the Sunshine Tour sanctioned Golden Pilsner Zimbabwe Open held at Royal Harare Golf Club which was dominated by South African golfers.

The local pros will see the upcoming tournament as an opportunity to seek some redemption and some of the countrys top professional golfers such as Charamba, Ignatius Mketekete, Robson Saurombe and Philip Tshuma are expected to grace the tournament.
