Zimbabwe has started the process of crafting a national climate change response strategy to prepare the country against global warming effects.

Secretary for Special Affairs in the Office of the President and Cabinet Thankful Musukutwa yesterday said: “Government has initiated the process to ensure coordination and effectiveness in programmes aimed at addressing climate change.

“The strategy will help the government determine whether there is need for a policy or another legal framework on climate change, as well as provide a framework for a comprehensive and strategic approach on aspects of adaptation, mitigation, technology, financing as well as public education and awareness.”

Musukutwa, who was addressing stakeholders at a Zimbabwe National Climate Change Response Strategy Formulation workshop in Harare, added:

“The approved plan of implementation of the task by the consultants, which is to be presented at this inception workshop, will guide the formulation of other thematic groups to make the process of monitoring easier for the NTT (National Task Team).”

Musukutwa said climate change was one of the biggest threats that mankind faced today.

He attributed the natural disasters that the country was facing to climate change.

“The devastating floods, droughts and storms we have seen in Zimbabwe of late and the unusual cold spells in April this year all show signs of climate change. Our preparedness and actions in response to extreme climate and weather events has been on an ad hoc basis. A National Climate Change Response Strategy will ensure that the country has a well-coordinated and integrated approach to climate change,” Musukutwa said.

Spearheading the policy formulation process is the University of Zimbabwe’s Institute of Environmental Studies’ Sara Feresu.
