The Zimbabwe women’s Under-18 water polo team missed out on a place at the Fina Youth Water Polo Women World Championships in Perth, Australia, to neighbours South Africa, last weekend.
The local women lost 3-0 to the South Africans in a three-match Test series during the final qualifying tournament in Johannesburg. By virtue of winning, the South Africans booked Africa’s sole ticket at the global competition at the expense of the determined Zimbabwean team. According to reports from South Africa, in the opening match the South Africans, who were inspired by Nicole McKenzie’s five goals, won the match
11-6 although Zimbabwe had threatened to upstage the hosts until the fourth quarter. Zimbabwe struggled in the second match, in which they were outplayed 14-2 by the hosts.
