The trial of former Chinhoyi Municipality treasurer William Mandinde, who is facing fraud charges involving $79 000, was aborted for the umpteenth time yesterday after the State requested for more time to prepare for the hearing.

Chinhoyi magistrate Jele Singandu postponed the matter to June 28, but Mandinde’s lawyers immediately applied for refusal of further remand if the trial fails to kick off on the agreed date.

Mandinde is being charged for failing to make bank deposits of cheques amounting to $79 629, 68.

The fraud and gross mismanagement of public funds charges emanated from a damning financial management audit that was conducted in February last year at the behest of Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo.

He is being jointly charged with four others, Arnold Madhuze, Ellison Chikwazvo, Polite Chikapu and Vincent Chafausipo.

The audit revealed that Mandinde allegedly collected and pocketed $71 433 cash at the main revenue collection point between February 24 2009 and October 25 2010.

It was also established that he did not bank cheques amounting to $79 629, 68.

He also allegedly claimed $2 020 despite being on full medical cover.

The treasurer was also allegedly given $7 100 as payment for a stand, but only accounted for $2 720 while $4 650 could not be accounted for.

George Mudzikitidzi represented the State.
