Four people died yesterday and several others were injured along Kirkman Road in Dzivarasekwa after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in collided with a Lofombo bus.

Assistant Inspector Luckmore Julius Chakanza said three people died on the spot and one on arrival on admission at Parirenyatwa Hopsital. “Four people died and 13 others were injured yesterday after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in collided with a bus,” said Chakanza.

He said all the injured were admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital. “The accident occurred along Kirkman Road after Sanganai Inn at 8:40am. It involved an AVM Lofombo bus and a Toyota Hiace.

“The Toyota Hiace was coming from Dzivarasekwa heading towards the city centre with 13 passengers on board while the bus was coming from the city centre heading towards Dzivarasekwa with no passengers,” Chakanza said.

He added: “The bus which was involved in the accident (a Lofombo one) was overtaking another Lofombo bus and the commuter omnibus travelling in the opposite direction was close, hence the head on collision with the bus. The commuter omnibus swerved to the left thereby causing sideswiping.”

He said both drivers escaped without injures and investigations are in progress.

This accident comes after a series of accidents which have been claiming lives around the country. Over the Independence holiday alone, eight people died on the country’s roads, according to police.
