Bulawayo Volleyball Association (BVA) chairperson Brian Manuel has been appointed the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) national league chairperson.

Manuel yesterday told NewsDay Sport: “I have been appointed chairman of the ZVA national league. I received the appointment letter last Thursday. It is a one-year appointment which is performance-based. My aim is to ensure that the league is run smoothly,” he said.

“We want to have professional teams in the league because we want to improve on the standard of our volleyball. We also want to ensure that we improve our performance in the Zone V1 Championships so that we at least get bronze medals when we compete there,” he said.

Nine teams participated in the national league last year which was won by Railstars, but there was no league action for the women.

“We want to incorporate the ladies as they also need to have the national league. There is also need to strategise because last year Railstars were the only Bulawayo team in the league which meant they had to travel a lot. We need to work around that,” he said.

ZVA first vice-president (competitions) Enzanai Madzivire doubled up as the league’s chairperson last year.

ZVA secretary-general Ringisai Mapondera confirmed the appointment.

“It is a constitutional requirement that we have a national league chairperson that is why we have elected Manuel. He has the technical abilities and the expertise,” he said.

Manuel was the BVA vice-president (technical) last year before he assumed the secretary-general’s post earlier this year.
