JOHANNESBURG — Moroka Swallows centre-back Luvhengo Mungomeni insists the prospect of coming up against Benni McCarthy’s Orlando Pirates today makes no difference to him as he will have to just keep on doing what he has been doing all season.

Mungomeni says he acknowledges the wealth of experience McCarthy has, but is not too concerned about him as football is a team sport, which is why Orlando Pirates will arrive at the Dobsonville Stadium as a team.

McCarthy returns to play against a team that he scored a brilliant free-kick against the last time the two met in November.

“I will do my job which is to defend and which is also to try and make sure the team wins. Who I come up against makes no difference because the ball that we chase is the same. Benni is a human being just like all of us, so what I do to all other strikers is the same thing that I will do to him,” teases Mungomeni.

“It is always good to come up against someone that you know and who is one of the best around like Benni. The thing is we all know what he can do and he has to be marked and given the same treatment that I give to other strikers,” adds the lanky defender.

Mungomeni adds that though there will still be five games remaining after today’s game this is a match that will have a huge say in determining the destination of the title.

Pirates are second with Swallows in third four points behind, making this clash in Soweto the pick of the mid-week ties and one that will draw a lot of attention despite the fact leaders Mamelodi Sundowns are also in action in Pretoria against Platinum Stars.

“This is going to be a very important game in the sense that it will determine a lot of things in as far as the destiny of the title is concerned. On our side, all we want is three points and have prepared the same way we always do though the plan of execution will not be the same.

“Pirates have good players and we are aware of the threat that they pose, but we will just continue doing what we have been doing to other teams this season. We played a draw against them earlier on in the season then lost in the Telkom Knockout Cup, so there is no way we want to lose again . . . we have to win,” adds the former Mamelodi Sundowns man. — KickOff
